Lucy rolled over her bed; she heard the family car drive away. Lucy giggled.
She'd been fiddling with her hair all morning and her mother warned her "Don't do that, or it will fall ou-" but her eyes always glazed over and her voice became hoarse.
Lucy had been left alone in the house; her mother had said "Just got to nip to the hospital for the results... D-dad is coming too. E-e-everything w-will be ok-kay." She dabbed at her eyes and put on a brave face. Lucy grinned back
"Okay mummy. Don't hurry back."
And the door was locked.

Lucy skipped to the bathroom with a spring in her step. "Wait till I see their face!" She thought happily. She had been planning this for a while; it was going to make everything better. She knew it would. She opened up her mummy's make-up bag and emptied the content on the tiles, knowing exactly what she was looking for. Lucy picked up the nail scissors and looked at herself in the mirror.

Lucy was seven years old.

"It will make Mummy and Daddy happy" Lucy thought and she measured out the length of a bunch of her hair with her fingers. She got to eye level and took a deep breath. With her mother's scissors, Lucy fed her hair through the metal and snipped. She looked at herself in the mirror and giggled her childish laugh.

"Don't come home yet mummy, I want to make sure I'm done first."

She stood on her tippy-toes to see the rest of her head, her long brown locks were now scattered on the floor and cut at uneven lengths. But Lucy didn't care. One-side of her hair was short, very short. Most locks measured above her ear and she ran her fingers through it. The other side was still long and mousy-brown, she swished her hair about and giggled when one side hit her face and the other side didn't. Lucy grabbed a fist full of her hair at the back of her head and snipped. She'd make a good hair-dresser she thought- gossiping to the customers and giggling at their unfunny stories- maybe that's what she would like to do when she is a bit older. Her dreams were sharply stopped when she felt a sting of pain in her finger, she had cut it. "Ow ow oweeey!" She licked the cut and continued with her hair. One side was slightly lopsided, but she could fix that.
Lucy snipped a little bit more and she smiled.
Her long locks had fallen on the bathroom floor and she was left with short, brown hair. She ran her fingers through it and giggled when her fingers stopped at her ears and even shorter. Maybe a hairdresser wasn't a thing she wanted to do anymore. It hurt too much, and how was she going to collect all her hair? Her plan wasn't done yet.

Lucy grabbed her top and collected her hair as she held her top like a pouch, 10 minutes later all her hair was collected in her top. I didn't look very much but it would help. Lucy knew it would help.

She heard the doorbell ring and let out a giddy squeal, she ran to the door, still holding her top like a pouch. Lucy unlocked the door and turned the handle.
"Lucy we have wonderful news- Oh my God." Her mother began.
Lucy's dad stared at her, gob-smacked.
Jamie's eyes bulged.

"Hello Jamie, How was the Hostiple? Was Chemo-Cheeeemo ther- was the Chemo thingy okay?" Smiled Lucy.
"What- What have you-" Stuttered her mother, but only to stop to choke back tears.

"Jamie, mummy said that you would lose all your hair after the 3rd time at the Hostiple and you used to have the same hair colour as me. So..."
Lucy scooped up her hair in her top and handed it to her older brother.

"I thought you needed it more than me. You can have hair now Jamie."

Her older brother looked down at her and smiled, tears welled in his eyes. He took the hair from his short-haired sister, removed his red cap and placed it on her head.

"Oh my..." Their father's tears began to roll down his face; he removed his glasses and wiped his eyes.

"I love you Lucy."
Jamie smiled and kissed his little sister on the cheek.
"But I only need one more Chemo-therapy, it's nearly gone."

"You mean that your Cancer is nearly gone?"
Replied Lucy her eyes shining, knowing that her older brother can now move on with his life. He could live his life like a normal 15 year old boy.

Lucy wrapped her arms around her brother's neck, their parents watched teary-eyed. Lucy never wanted to let go, she never wanted her brother to get sick again or for that Cancer to come back. She never wanted Jamie to have another Chemo-therapy.
But most importantly, she would never let go of her brother, Jamie.

She knew that she could help and she did. And the little angel Lucy kissed her brother on the cheek and whispered in his ear.

"I love you too, Jamie."
